Recreational Therapy 

Our Recreational Therapy (RT) department strives to implement and facilitate inclusive and specialized recreation and leisure pursuits opportunities for participants that support a balanced and active life by providing programming that focuses on the 7 Dimensions of Wellness ultimately increasing our members quality of life. Our department works together to provide a multitude of inclusive and specialized recreation and leisure opportunities for groups and individuals.

Therapeutic Group Recreation

Therapeutic Group Recreational provides opportunities for participants that support a balanced and active life by providing programming that focuses on the 7 Dimensions of Wellness ultimately increasing their quality of life. Offerings include but are not limited to the below programs.

Semester Prep Workshops

Get a head start this semester by joining a Semester Prep Workshop! This workshop will help you gain skills needed to efficiently manage your time, so that you can work to create a sense of balance in the semester. Look for these hour long workshops within the first three weeks of each semester. We have an extra 30 min that we will offer unique support to each participant

    • Wednesday, February 7: 1-2 pm virtual via Zoom

Therapeutic Horticulture: Spring Garden

Come gain hands on experience in the WELL garden. This program will provide everyone that comes to the WELL with the opportunity to increase their Environmental, Spiritual, Physical, Emotional, Socio-Cultural, and Intellectual Dimension of Wellness. This semester, we will teach you how to prepare a Zone 9b garden for Spring weather. Click the link below to sign up by February 22.

Adaptive Sports

The Recreational Therapy Department and City of Sacramento Access Leisure will teach participants basic skills needed to play a variety of adaptive sports. No experience is needed and we invite people of all abilities to participate. Not sure if this program is right for you? Contact us for an assessment!

Adaptive Sports Sampler

Bring your friends and family for an opportunity to learn about the different adaptive sports that The WELL has to offer. The Recreational Therapy Department, along with Access Leisure, will be hosting the Adaptive Sports Sampler on Saturday, April 6th from 12pm-3pm. This event is FREE and open to the community. Attendees will be able to participate in:

  • Adaptive Climbing
  • Adaptive Cycling
  • Wheelchair Basketball
  • Wheelchair Pickleball
  • Wheelchair Rugby

Volunteer Opportunities

The Recreational Therapy Department offers many on-campus volunteer opportunities throughout the semester. Volunteers will have the opportunity to receive training on inclusive recreation and learn how to use adaptive equipment. Click below to sign up!

Adaptive Sports (Tuesdays, 3:30pm-6:30pm)

The Recreational Therapy Department teaches participants basic skills needed to play a variety of Adaptive Sports. This program is done in collaboration with Access Leisure from The City of Sacramento. Volunteers can expect to assist with facilitating drills, retrieving equipment, and playing alongside participants.

Therapeutic Horticulture (Wednesdays, 10:15am-12:15pm)

Volunteers will participate in nature engagement activities alongside students with neurodiversities from two local Sacramento School Districts. Activities include, but are not limited to, meditation, mindful stretching, nature sketching, garden education games, and garden maintenance. The garden features raised flower beds, adaptive tools, and a wide variety of plant life for participants and volunteers to enjoy. 

Unified Sports: Basketball (Thursdays, 9am-11:30am)

The Recreational Therapy Department, in collaboration with Special Olympics, works with students with neurodiversities from two Sacramento Unified School Districts to develop fundamental skills needed to play basketball over the course of eight weeks. Volunteers will have the opportunity to facilitate drills in small groups and work together to coach a team of participants. No experience or knowledge in basketball is necessary to volunteer.
